Workshop description

During this one day workshop, students will paint a realistic portrait from photos. We will be working in alla prima technique, and each student will complete the workshop with a finished mini portrait painting. Through lecture, demonstration, and individual assistance, Heather offers an understanding of accuracy, value, color theory, and paint stroke economy to create an expressive lifelike portrait.

Heather will also discuss how to choose the right reference and paint the small little details to make your painting come to life. All skill levels are welcome, individual attention will be given to each student according to his/her current artistic skill level and personal goals.

About the artist

Heather Olsen is a contemporary realistic oil painter based in Salt Lake City, UT. Her work seeks to explore the human condition and the emotional aspect of our existence. She strives to portray the soul of her subject matter, whether it be human or not. Her artwork is in both private and public collections, and has exhibited nationwide in galleries such as Springville Art Museum, Mad Gallery in Soho, NY, JKR Gallery, and X Gallery in NYC, among others. She is represented by Brushworks Gallery and Urban Arts Gallery in SLC, Relics Gallery in Holladay, and online galleries Saatchi Art and Artfinder.

Notable commissioned paintings hang in all of the Intermountain Medical Centers in the greater Salt Lake area, and her work has been published in the Salt Lake Tribune and on local news stations. She has been recognized for her excellence in various competitions such as the Worldwide Art Battle, Holladay Fine Art Show, and People’s Choice award at Urban Art Gallery’s Connect Competition. Heather studied with various professional artists at both the Hein Academy and Bridge Academy before receiving her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Utah.

She loves to study new approaches and techniques from artists around the world and considers herself a lifelong art student. In addition to her thirst for learning, she also teaches and shares her knowledge. She has instructed and demonstrated through Sentient Academy, and instructs private workshops throughout Utah and California.
