Workshop Description
Introduction to sculptural form using still life objects where we will explore surfaces, texture, composition and basic armature building.
We will also take a day to cast in plaster the objects we will be sculpting using the waste mold technique.
I will also be available to meet with class attendees to discuss current sculpture projects that may have going and how I can assist them approaching casting and working with foundry processes.
Artist Biography - Virgil Tyler Oertle
My sculpting experience began at the age of 13 with a chainsaw. For eight years I was sculpting alongside my father, Rand Oertle, in his studio or out on some stretch of road selling our work.
This introduction to art, through sculpture, imprinted on me a love of creation and the natural world.
I have worked in art foundry settings, acted as studio assistant for many artists, hold a BFA in sculpture from the Lyme Academy of Fine art, an MFA for the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and now am sculpting full time for private institutions around the U.S.
My primary interest is in the human figure. I see it as the pinnacle of creation and want to spend my life working with it to express ideas and concepts that are personal to me and my experience. Ceramics and drawing also are part of my creative output which to me give me outlets to create. For us to be truly free it is important to learn and grow using all the avenues available to us in the arts without constraints.
