Subtractive painting involves adding layers of paint to a ground, then selectively wiping them away to create an image. Using Golden OPEN acrylics on top of molding paste, and in conjunction with glazes, it’s possible to create highly colorful compositions with layers of depth. This exciting technique is typically done with oil paint, but the fluidity of the OPEN acrylics allows this method to be completely “solvent-free”. Landscapes, portraits, realism or abstract imagery are all appropriate for the subtractive process. Students will have the opportunity to create several paintings in class.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Stacy Phillips has lived in Utah since 1987. She is currently living and working in Salt Lake City, Utah.
“There are infinite possibilities and challenges in creating work when you think of the materials and concepts that are available to the open mind. I am fascinated and addicted to the process of making art. To be submersed from the beginning of an idea through the course of execution is the state of the creative process that I wish to reside. My intent is to absorb as much about this process as I can both technically and conceptually in my life time. To challenge myself throughout the journey of creating art and to maintain the passion of the desire.”
