Two Approaches to the Contemporary Still Life with Sarah Sedwick and Todd M. Casey

For Painters of All Levels

Date: Thurs, Sept 16 - Sun, Sept 19 2021

Times: 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

Cost: $760 / some materials included

Workshop description

Join Oregon artist Sarah Sedwick and Connecticut artist Todd M. Casey, author of the bestselling book The Art of Still Life, for two unique takes on the alla prima still life! You’ll experience two days of instruction from each artist, including slideshows, painting, drawing, and still life setup demonstrations, and daily joint critiques.

During the first two days, you’ll learn Sarah’s favorite ways to loosen up your paintings and energize your brushwork, creating a finished piece from a fun, colorful still life. Next, you’ll get two days of insight into Todd’s process for still life setup using the props of your choice, focusing on lighting, and creating form on your canvas. Both artists will address composition design, color mixing, and edges - and you’ll have plenty of painting time, creating two finished pieces, as well as several quick, lively studies.

Working with a split-primary palette simplifies that materials list, and free samples of Sarah and Todd’s favorite products will be provided for all.

Instruction is in oils. Painters of ALL levels welcome.

Ages 16+. Supply list provided upon signup.

About the Instructors:

Sarah Sedwick is a prolific painter of still lifes inspired by color combinations  and perceptual effects. All are painted from life.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Sarah earned a BFA in Illustration from The Maryland  Institute, College of Art in 2001.

Based in Oregon, she has been teaching workshops on alla prima still life and  portrait since 2013, and also conducts an online art mentorship program.

Her teaching philosophy is simple: the more you paint, the more you improve -  so removing the blocks that keep us from the canvas is key. Loosen up, let go of  perfectionism, and watch the results unfold!

Todd M. Casey was born and raised in Lowell, Massachusetts. His artistic education includes a BFA in Communication Design from Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, Massachusetts.

Casey’s work, touches on more than simplistic, rigid realism. There is a haunting, nearly literary quality to each frame. A feeling that subjects are viewed from behind rain-kissed, mottled glass; burnished by enigmatic candlelight— or brushed by the soft, hazy edges of a half-remembered dream. Works that are classically styled, but progressive in approach— fine, somber details, rendered with a clear, meticulous eye; and yet, somehow, subdued with a gentle, melancholic focus.

His paintings have been honored with awards, several times in recent years. Most recently, he won first place 3 years in a row in the Portrait Society of America Members Only Competition, and first place (Gold Medal) in oil painting from the Allied Artists of America, in 2015. His work can be found in collections throughout the United States; and exclusively on the East Coast, at Rehs Contemporary Gallery, in Midtown New York City.

Casey lives in Connecticut, with his wife, Gina and daughter Scarlet. When he is not working in his home studio, or preparing for gallery events, he reads Joseph Campbell, Paulo Coelho and Eckhardt Tolle, watches Woody Allen movies— or toils in his garden, when the weather allows.
